It’s a part of their core strategy.

This guide explains everything you need to know about Iberia reward seats with Avios, how to find them, book them, and how they can unlock value for UK travellers.

What are Iberia reward seats?

Reward seats are flights you book using Avios instead of cash. Rather than paying the full ticket price, you redeem points for most of the cost, and cover taxes and fees with cash. With airlines such as British Airways, this can mean amounts as low as £1 for a return fare. For Iberia reward flights it’s closer to £25, but that’s still excellent value when you consider you’re paying with the majority of the flight with points you’ve earned through every day spending.

However, not every seat on a plane can be booked this way. Airlines release a limited number of seats per flight specifically for Avios bookings. These are known as “reward seats” or “award availability.” While Iberia doesn’t guarantee a specific number, industry analysis shows a typical pattern of 4 Economy and 2 Business Class for short-haul flights, and 4 Economy, 2 Premium Economy and 2 Business Class for long-haul.

With Iberia, these seats are typically released up to around a year in advance, meaning planning early can give you a major advantage.

The key thing to understand is that you’re not just exchanging Avios for money — you’re accessing a separate pool of seats. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

How Iberia prices reward flights

Iberia uses a distance-based pricing model combined with peak and off-peak calendars. That means, the further you fly, the more Avios you’ll need, and flights during busy periods (like school holidays or Christmas) cost more. Off-peak dates can offer exceptional value however.

This system is very different from dynamic pricing models used by some airlines, where prices fluctuate constantly – although I’d certainly expect Iberia to move towards a hybrid model in the future. Luckily, right now with Iberia, once you understand the chart, you can predict pricing and plan reward seat booking strategically.

For an Iberia reward flight booking between London and Madrid you can expect to pay up to 8,500 Avios in Economy, and up to 17,000 Avios in Business Class. For longer haul flights from the UK, you can reach New York via Madrid and expect to pay up to 30,000 Avios in Economy, and up to 50,000 in Business Class.

How to book Iberia reward flights with Avios

There are two main ways to book Iberia reward seats as a UK traveller.

1. Booking through Iberia Plus

You can book directly through Iberia’s own loyalty programme, Iberia Plus.

The process is straightforward:

Create a free Iberia Plus account

Log in and select your flights

Select the option to pay with Avios

Pay Avios plus taxes and fees

You need an Iberia account to search reward availability on their website, and reward seat alerts aren’t available, so I’d suggest you use a reward flight finder tool to find your preferred seats and then book via Iberia. You can also use these to set alerts if the reward seat you want isn’t available at the time you search.

2. Booking through British Airways

Because both airlines use Avios, you can also book Iberia flights through British Airways Club:

Log into your BA account

Look for Iberia-operated routes

Pay using your Avios

However, this isn’t actually a particularly valuable option — and that leads to one of the most important strategies I’ll detail below.

Everything you need to plan your trip in 2026

The key strategy: Moving Avios between programmes

Avios isn’t tied to just one airline. Giving it more value, in my opinion, than any other airline loyalty currency. You can move your Avios points between British Airways Club and Iberia Plus at a rate of 1:1.This means you can earn Avios in the UK (e.g. via BA or credit cards), move them to Iberia Plus as needed and access more routes, more reward seat options and better flexibility.

Why Iberia reward seats are so valuable

Using Avios on Iberia unlocks a number of travel perks, including

1. Lower taxes and fees on some routes

One of the biggest frustrations Avios collectors find with redemptions via British Airways is the higher cash component on some routes or cabin classes. On some comparative long haul routes, Iberia charges lower taxes and surcharges. It does come with a price though.

As an example, a return British Airways Business Class Avios redemption to New York costs £399 in taxes and fees. The same journey via Iberia (via Madrid) costs between £150- £250 in taxes. For UK travellers, even though a changeover in Madrid is required, the cash savings can justify using Iberia over British Airways in this scenario.

2. Access to Avios-Only availability

Iberia reward seats are reserved exclusively for Avios bookings. And in peak travel periods, even if cash fares are very high (think summer holidays), by booking reward seats using points you can bypass this seasonal price inflation, and pay a fixed cost for your reward seat. Allowing you to benefit from some excellent cash value savings if you travel during school holidays etc.

3. Upgrade opportunities

As well as booking a seat, Iberia also allows you to use Avios to upgrade flights. For example, you can book a cash ticket in Economy, then use Iberia Avios to upgrade to Premium Economy or Business. This can sometimes offer better value than booking a full reward ticket – but I’d always recommend that you do your sums before making a booking this way to ensure you’re getting the best value. To do this, simply look at the cash cost of your upgraded ticket and compare it to the overall cost you’ll pay for your cash booking plus Avios upgrade on top. Hint here – I always value 1 Avios as 1p to get the most from my points.

Sometimes you’ll look for an upgrade but it’s not available at the time you search. In this case, use a reward flight finder tool and set an alert to get notified if a seat does pop up – this way you won’t miss out. I’ve managed to upgrade with this tactic several times.

4. Oneworld partner access

Iberia is part of the Oneworld alliance. This means your Avios can also be used on partner airlines such as British Airways, American Airlines, Qatar Airways and Finnair.

This expands your options far beyond Iberia’s own network. You can move points between programmes and access routes that Iberia doesn’t offer. It also means you can access other airline lounges at the airport with your Oneworld Status and airline ticket – so you get more options to enhance your travel experience before you even fly.

The UK traveller advantage

For travellers based in the UK, Iberia opens up a particularly powerful Avios reward seat strategy.

Positioning via Madrid

Instead of flying long-haul from London, many travellers using Iberia reward seats book a cheap flight from London to Madrid and start their long-haul journey from there using points. This is known as a “positioning flight.” Using this tactic you can lower your cash taxes and fees, and access lower Avios pricing. Even after adding the extra flight, the total cost is often substantially lower.

Combining Avios earning and spending

The prime factor of any reward travel planning is getting points in the first place. Avios are easy to earn in the UK through Avios credit cards, such as Barclaycard and American Express, retail partners you’ll find on the BA Shopping Portal or Avios Shop, and conversions from other loyalty programmes such as Nectar points.

By combining UK earning with an Iberia reward flight, not only will you boost your points pot quickly, you’ll effectively maximise the value of your points.

Downsides to be aware of

While Iberia reward seats offer great value, there are some trade-offs to consider.

Limited availability

Reward seats are limited and can disappear quickly, especially on popular routes. There are over 60m people across the globe collecting Avios to book reward seats. 6.5m of those are already Iberia Club members, and 13m are members of the British Airways Club. That’s a lot of people looking for seats at any given time. Booking early is often essential. I always recommend Avios collectors use a reward flight finder tool to set up flight alerts and contact the airline as soon as they get notified their reward seats are available to book with Avios. It’s always worked for me.

Peak pricing

During busy periods, particularly around the school holidays, Avios costs increase. If you can travel off peak, you’ll notice a big difference in Avios costs. That being said, if you do need to travel in peak times, be sure to check the cash fare equivalent on the airline website. Cash fares notoriously spike during peak seasons, so you might find that you’re still making some great cash savings by using Avios to book seats.

Restrictions on changes

Some Iberia bookings — particularly partner redemptions — can be less flexible. Changes or cancellations may incur fees, and in some cases may not be allowed. Always check the T&C’s of your booking before check out.

Economy fare limitations

Similarly, recent Iberia changes mean that some Economy reward tickets may not include checked baggage or free seat selection. As above, always check what’s included before booking.

A simple Iberia Avios strategy

To bring it all together, here’s a typical approach used by savvy UK travellers:

Earn Avios through British Airways or UK partners

Transfer Avios to Iberia Plus

Book long-haul Iberia flights (especially business class)

Add a separate flight to Madrid if needed

Final thoughts

Iberia reward seats are one of the most underused — and most powerful — tools available to UK Avios collectors. While they require a bit more planning, the payoff can be substantial. If you’re serious about getting the most out of your Avios, Iberia isn’t just worth considering — it should be part of your core strategy.

Kayleigh Hepworth

Kayleigh Hepworth is Head of Marketing at Reward Flight Finder.
