Sudeley Castle\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>A mere six miles from Cheltenham, in Winchcombe, sits Sudeley Castle.\u00a0 Historian David Starkey\u2019s film blunt commentary explains why the castle changed hands so frequently and dramatically in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries: the monarchs rewarded men who were doing well with a castle as a gift.\u00a0\u00a0If they made a mistake they lost both the castle and their head.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"767\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206182 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.theblyde.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748214756_950_8-reasons-to-visit-Cheltenham-UK.jpg\"  data-\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.theblyde.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748214756_950_8-reasons-to-visit-Cheltenham-UK.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206182\"  \/><\/figure>\n<p>In 1649, after the Civil War, the castle was \u201cslighted\u201d; made unfit for defence by the victorious Roundheads. Since the 19th century the crenelated castle and its many gardens have been impressively restored.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sudeley\u2019s chapel houses the grave of Henry Vlll\u2019s sixth and final wife, Katherine Parr. Freed of her duty on Henry\u2019s death, with indecent haste she married Thomas Seymour, the love of her love, a mere two months after she was widowed. There was no happy ending. At the age of 36, Katherine died of purple fever, just five days after giving birth to a daughter. She became the only English Queen buried on private land.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-6-ian-coley-sporting-s-shooting-school\">6. Ian Coley Sporting\u2019s Shooting School<\/h2>\n<p>On the south eastern fringes of Cheltenham, Ian Coley Sporting\u2019s Shooting School introduces clay pigeon shooting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Offering a \u201cHave a go 25\u201d, instructors equip beginners with appropriate weight guns, eye-protectors, shoulder padding for the recoil, cartridges and an essential safety briefing. Such is the quality of the friendly instruction, quickly identifying dominant eyes and tendencies to raise the chin from the gun, that we are soon surprisingly hitting clays.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"767\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206172 perfmatters-lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.theblyde.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748214756_675_8-reasons-to-visit-Cheltenham-UK.jpg\"  data-\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"920\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.theblyde.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1748214756_675_8-reasons-to-visit-Cheltenham-UK.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-206172\"  \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alongside the country clothing store, sits the gun shop. There aficionados can buy a gun off the shelf or be measured up for a bespoke model. \u201cEven an eighth of an inch can make a difference,\u201d says Alex who does the measuring. Some customers, who\u2019ve ordered from Beretta travel to Italy\u2019s Gardone Valley to watch their gun being made.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-7-civic-splendour\">7.
